How do I set up Apple Mail on iOS (newer devices)?

Here are the steps to follow if you are adding an account that is currently not set up on your iOS device.

Step 1: Open your Settings app.

Step 2: Tap Mail.

Step 3: In the Accounts section, tap Add Account.

Step 4: Tap Other.

Step 5: Tap Add Mail Account.

Step 6: Fill in the requested information.

  • Name: This will be the name that shows on your sent emails.
  • Email: your email address
  • Password: your email password
  • Description: This is a description of the account on the device; it is not server-specific and can be whatever you like.

Step 7: Tap Next.

Step 8: You should now see your account settings screen. Select the service type (IMAP or POP) and click Next

  • IMAP: keep messages synced to the server
  • POP: download and store messages locally

Step 9: In the Incoming Mail Server section, fill in the following settings:

  • Host Name: mail.example.com (replace example.com with your domain)
  • User Name: your email address (you need to include the @example.com)
  • Password: your email password

Step 10: Enter the same information in the Outgoing Mail Server section. Note: It may say the username and password are optional, but we recommend entering them here.

Step 11: Tap Save.

Step 12: You may see one (or a few) warning pop-ups:

  • Secure Connection Failed: Tap Continue.
  • Cannot Connect Using SSL- Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?: Choose Yes.
  • You may not be able to send or receive mail: Tap Continue.

Step 13: Congratulations! You’ve just added your email account to your iOS device. If you have trouble sending or receiving email, try running through the steps to update an existing account to see if that helps. 

How do I update Apple Mail on iOS (newer devices)

If your email is already added to your device but you are experiencing issues sending or receiving mail, or if you are encountering pop-ups stating Unable to Verify Certificate, you may need to adjust your incoming and outgoing mail settings. Note: If you are experiencing issues with both incoming and outgoing mail, it is recommended to update the incoming settings first and then address the outgoing settings.

Step 1: Open your Settings app.

Step 2: Tap Mail.

Step 3: In the Accounts section, tap on your email address.

Step 4: You can now view the email address, along with toggles for Mail and Notes. Tap the email address (this screen may not always appear).

Step 5: Note whether the grey section displays either “POP” or “IMAP”, as this will determine which port to use.

Step 6: Check the POP or IMAP Account Information.

  • Name: This will be the name shown on your sent emails.
  • Email: This is your email address (this is greyed out and cannot be changed).
  • Description: This is a description of the account on the device; it is not server-specific and can be whatever you like.

Step 7: Check the Incoming Mail Server section

  • Host Name: mail.example.com (replace example.com with your domain name)
  • User Name: your email address
  • Password: your email password (it is best to delete the dots and enter your password again)

Step 8: Scroll down to the bottom and tap Advanced.

Step 9: Scroll down to the Incoming Settings section. (You can set the previous settings based on personal preference.)

  • Use SSL: should be on
  • Authentication: must be set to Password.
  • IMAP Path Prefix (if using IMAP): leave this at the default setting
  • Delete from server (if using POP): this is a personal preference
  • Server Port
    • IMAP: 993
    • POP: 995

Step 10: Once you are satisfied that these settings are all correct, return to the main account settings screen by tapping Back in the upper left.

Step 11: Click Done in the upper right to verify the changes.

Step 12: Scroll down to the bottom of the account settings screen and tap SMTP.

Step 13: Tap on the server listed directly below Primary Server.

Step 14: You should now see the outgoing (SMTP) settings:

  • Server: should be on, but leave it for now
  • Host Name: mail.example.com (replace example.com with your domain)
  • User Name: your email address
  • Password: your email address password
  • Use SSL: should be on
  • Authentication: must be set to Password
  • Server Port: 465

Step 15: Tap Done in the upper right. This will cause the device to verify the outgoing server.
